Mishari Rashid al-Afasy was born in Kuwait City on 5 September 1976. His full name is Mishary Rashid Ghareeb Mohammed Rashed al-Afasy.
The UAE news site Al Ain says he memorised the whole Quran between 1992 and 1994. He then studied at the College of the Holy Quran at the Islamic University of Madinah, where he took the ten qira'at, the ten canonical readings of the Quran, and tafsir, which is Quranic exegesis.
The Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Anba reported in November 2009 that senior reciters of al-Azhar, among them Sheikh Ahmad al-Ma'sarawi, Sheikh Ahmad al-Zayat and Sheikh Abdul Rafi' Ridwan, had given him an ijaza, a formal permission to recite and to teach, in the narration of Hafs from Asim by the way of al-Shatibiyyah. The same report said that al-Azhar had approved his second complete murattal recording, made live during the taraweeh and qiyam prayers in California in Ramadan that year, in the narration of Hafs from Asim by the way of al-Tayyibah.
He is a qari, an imam and a preacher, and he is the imam of Masjid al-Kabir, the Grand Mosque of Kuwait. He also records nasheed, in Arabic and in other languages among them Japanese, Turkish, English and French. He promotes Islam through two satellite channels, a website and video. His YouTube channel has 11.6 million subscribers, and The Muslim 500 counts more than 49 million followers across his social accounts.

Maher al-Muaiqly was born in Medina on 7 January 1969. The newspaper Okaz says he memorised the Quran in the Prophet's Mosque and holds an ijaza, a chain of authorisation, in the narration of Hafs. He first studied mathematics at the Teachers College in Medina and then worked as a teacher.
He went on to Islamic law, taking a master's degree in the jurisprudence of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal at Umm al-Qura University in Makkah, a doctorate in Quranic exegesis at the same university, and a second doctorate in jurisprudence in December 2012. He was later promoted to full professor. He teaches at Umm al-Qura University and has served as vice dean for graduate studies and scientific research, in the College of Judicial Studies and Regulations.
He was imam and khatib of al-Sa'di Mosque in the al-Awali district of Makkah, and he led the taraweeh and qiyam prayers at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina before moving to the Grand Mosque in Makkah. Okaz says a royal order of 22 Sha'ban 1428 AH, which falls in early September 2007, appointed him an imam there; Wikipedia gives 9 August 2007. He is now its imam and khatib.
In 2024 he gave the Hajj sermon at Namirah Mosque on Arafah. The Saudi Press Agency still named him imam and khatib of the Grand Mosque in July 2026.

Saad al-Ghamdi was born in Dammam, in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, in 1387 AH, which is 1967. He graduated from the College of Sharia of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Al-Ahsa, in the department of usul al-din, in 1410 AH. Okaz says he completed his memorisation of the whole Quran in the same year; the newspaper Al-Watan gives 1415 AH instead.
He received his ijaza, a chain of authorisation, in the narration of Hafs from Asim in 1417 AH. He is the imam of the Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Mosque in Dammam, and he has led prayers in Bahrain, Austria, the United Kingdom and the United States.
In 1430 AH, which is 2009, a royal decree appointed him one of the taraweeh imams at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, and he led those prayers there in Ramadan that year. He worked as a teacher and as an educational supervisor for Islamic education, and he now supervises the Muhammad al-Fatih private schools in Dammam and two Quran learning centres.

Khalid al-Jalil, in full Khalid bin Fahd al-Jalil, is a Saudi reciter and imam in Riyadh. Before his present post he led the prayers at al-Khair Mosque in the al-Aqiq district of the city.
On 8 Ramadan 1429, which is 8 September 2008, the King Khalid Charitable Foundation appointed him imam and khatib of King Khalid Mosque in Riyadh. He took over from Sheikh Adel bin Salem al-Kalbani, who had held the post for more than twenty years and who moved to Makkah to lead the prayers at the Grand Mosque.
In January 2009 the newspaper Al-Eqtisadiah reported that many worshippers from his former mosque had begun to come to King Khalid Mosque to pray behind him. The same report counted him among a younger group of Riyadh imams, with Nasser al-Qatami and Ibrahim al-Jibreen. In September 2023 the Saudi Press Agency reported his appointment as official spokesman of the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta. In March 2025 the newspaper Al-Riyadh still described him as imam and khatib of King Khalid Mosque.

Mohammed Hady Touré, in Arabic Muhammad al-Hadi bin Abdul Aziz Touré, is a Quran reciter from Senegal. The Saudi newspaper Sabq, listing the judges of the Otr Elkalam competition in February 2023, said he was born in the city of Saint-Louis, which it calls a known place of learning.
The Senegalese site Senego reported in May 2018 that he carries the name of his grandfather, Serigne Hady Touré, and that he recited at the ninth religious conference of the Quran association of Fass Touré. In January 2018 the Egyptian site Masrawy published a video of him reciting verse 23 of Surah Yusuf and combining the ten readings in it.
The Egyptian research centre Pharos says he memorised the Quran as a boy with his maternal uncle, in the reading of Warsh, later took an ijaza, a formal permission to recite, in the ten minor readings, and recites in the manner of the Egyptian reciter Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary.

Ahmad Alnufais, in full Ahmad bin Abdul Aziz bin Ali bin Muhammad bin Ali al-Nufais, was born in Kuwait. He graduated in usul al-fiqh, the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. He read the Quran with a number of teachers, among them Sheikh Ibrahim al-Akhdar and Sheikh Dr Abdullah Jarullah, and he holds ijazas, which are formal chains of authorisation, in the readings of Hafs and Shu'ba.
He is an imam of the Grand Mosque of Kuwait. The Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai described him in May 2023 as the imam of the Grand Mosque in Ramadan and an imam and khatib of the Ministry of Awqaf, and the Saudi Press Agency called him imam of the Grand Mosque in June 2025. He travels outside Kuwait to give lectures, and he has spoken about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
His YouTube channel has passed 300 million views. The Muslim 500, the yearly reference published by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan, lists him among its Quran reciters. He lives in Kuwait with his wife and their three children.

Saud ash-Shuraim was born in Riyadh. The sources differ on when: the newspaper Okaz gives 1386 AH, which runs from April 1966 to April 1967, and Wikipedia gives 19 January 1966, a date that falls before that Hijri year. He memorised the Quran as a teenager, in about six months.
He took a bachelor's degree in Islamic creed and contemporary doctrines from Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in 1988, a master's degree in comparative jurisprudence from the Supreme Judicial Institute in 1992, and a doctorate in Islamic jurisprudence from Umm al-Qura University in Makkah; Wikipedia and Arab News date the doctorate 1995, and Okaz gives 1423 AH, which is 2002 or 2003.
King Fahd appointed him imam and khatib of the Grand Mosque in Makkah in 1991, and he led the taraweeh prayers there in Ramadan from that year. He was made a judge at the High Court in Makkah in 1992.
From 1995 he taught in the Faculty of Sharia at Umm al-Qura University, and in June 2010 he was promoted to specialist professor of fiqh. He writes on Islamic theology, jurisprudence and Arabic poetry. Okaz still described him as imam and khatib of the Grand Mosque on 30 September 2022; Wikipedia says he left the post in 2022.

Abu Bakr al-Shatri was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 1970. The Saudi newspaper Al-Watan wrote in May 2019 that he is a Yemeni national. He is also called Abu Abdurrahman.
He began to learn to read the Quran in his fifth year of primary school, through summer courses, and he studied under Sheikh Ayman Rushdi Suwaid. Al-Watan says Sheikh Ayman Suwaid gave him his ijaza, a chain of authorisation, in the narration of Hafs from Asim in 1416 AH, which is 1995 or 1996. He took a master's degree in accounting in 1420 AH, which is 1999 or 2000.
He has recorded the complete Quran twice. Al-Watan dates the recordings 1409 AH and 1428 AH, which is about 1988 and 2007; Wikipedia gives 1988 and 2006.
He has led the prayers and given sermons in many mosques in Saudi Arabia, and he is the imam of al-Furqan Mosque in the Hay Annasim district of Jeddah. He has taken part in conferences abroad, and in 2013 he chaired the jury of an international Quran recitation competition in Moscow. He is married and has four children.

Abdul Basit Abdus Samad was born in 1927 in the village of al-Mara'iza, which belongs to Armant in the Qena governorate of Upper Egypt. The Egyptian site Masrawy says early January 1927, and Al Jazeera gives 1 January.
His grandfather and his father were both known for reciting the Quran, and two of his brothers memorised it as well. He entered the village kuttab, the Quran school, at six and completed his memorisation by the age of ten. The Cairo governorate's page on him names his kuttab teacher as Sheikh Muhammad al-Amir. He then studied the Quranic readings in the village of Asfun, and Masrawy says he took the readings from the Azhari scholar Sheikh Muhammad Salim Hamada.
He joined Egyptian radio in 1951, and his first broadcast recitation was from Surah Fatir. He served as reciter at the Mosque of Imam al-Shafi'i in Cairo and at the Mosque of Imam al-Husayn, where he succeeded Sheikh Mahmoud Ali al-Banna. Al-Ahram recounts that Egyptian radio completed a project in 1965 to record complete murattal recitations of the Quran in the narration of Hafs from Asim by three reciters, Mustafa Ismail, Mohamed Siddiq al-Minshawi and Abdul Basit. In 1984 he was elected the first head of the Egyptian union of Quran reciters.
He recited in many countries, among them Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Senegal, Pakistan and South Africa, and he received state honours from several of them. He died in Cairo on 30 November 1988.

Mohamed Siddiq al-Minshawi was born on 20 January 1920 in the village of al-Mansha, in the Sohag governorate of Upper Egypt. He came from a family of reciters. His father, Siddiq al-Minshawi, was among the best known reciters of his time, and his brother Mahmoud recited as well.
He began memorising the Quran with his father and completed it at the village kuttab with Sheikh Muhammad al-Namaki. Al-Ahram gave his age at completion as eight in 2021, and in 2024 it wrote that the accounts differ between eight and eleven. He learned the rules of recitation with Sheikh Muhammad Abu al-Ala, took up the readings from the age of twelve, and held an ijaza, a formal permission, in the ten readings from Sheikh Muhammad Saudi.
Egyptian radio came to him to record him rather than ask him to sit its audition, because the senior scholars of the day judged a test unnecessary. He recorded for the Egyptian Quran radio station, including the Mushaf al-Mu'allim. In 1965 Egyptian radio recorded his complete murattal recitation in the narration of Hafs from Asim, in the same project as Mustafa Ismail and Abdul Basit. The Ministry of Awqaf appointed him reciter of the main mosque of Zamalek in Cairo, and he stayed there until his death.
He recited in Kuwait, in Syria and at al-Aqsa Mosque, among other places. He held the title Shaykh al-Maqari, and listeners called him al-Sawt al-Baki, the weeping voice. He suffered from oesophageal varices, and he died of it on 20 June 1969, at the age of 49.

Abdur-Rahman as-Sudais memorised the Quran at the age of twelve. The newspaper Al-Riyadh says his father put him in a memorisation group in Riyadh supervised by Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah Al Faryan, that Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Majid Dhakir followed his recitation, and that his last teacher was Sheikh Muhammad Ali Hassan.
He studied in Riyadh and graduated from the College of Sharia there in 1983. He took a master's degree at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University and a doctorate in Islamic law at Umm al-Qura University in Makkah.
The order appointing him an imam and khatib of the Grand Mosque in Makkah was issued in 1984. On 8 May 2012 a royal decree made him head of the presidency for the two holy mosques, at the rank of minister. On 8 August 2023 a further royal order appointed him president of the new Presidency of Religious Affairs at the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, again at the rank of minister. The Saudi Press Agency still gave him that title in July 2026.
The Dubai International Holy Quran Award named him its Islamic Personality of the Year. The sources differ on his birth: Saudipedia gives Riyadh in 1962, Al-Riyadh gives Riyadh in 1382 AH, which runs from June 1962 to May 1963, and Wikipedia gives al-Bukayriyah in Al-Qassim on 23 November 1963.

Khalifa Musabbah Al Tunaiji is an Emirati reciter and a civil engineer. He told Al Bayan in 2001 that he began memorising the Quran at the Al Dhaid centre at the age of four, finished seven years later at eleven, and received an ijaza, a formal permission to recite, from his teacher Sheikh Ghulam bin Husain.
He told the paper in December 1999 that the Dubai International Holy Quran Award had sent him to Madinah to read with Sheikh Ibrahim al-Akhdar, and that he had come tenth in the Award's previous competition. Al Bayan later reported that this was one of the ten places of the Award's second edition. The Award's website says it sponsored complete murattal recordings, his among them; Al Bayan reported its release in September 2008.
Al Khaleej interviewed him in 2015 as head of the Sharjah housing department, and reported in 2022 that he is president of the Holy Quran Complex in Sharjah.

Hani ar-Rifai was born in Jeddah in 1974 and grew up in a family that cared for the Quran. He joined memorisation circles at the age of seven, at the Sheikh Hassan Arab Mosque in the al-Hindawiya district of Jeddah, under Sheikh Muhammad Yusuf.
He moved on to al-Ammari Mosque and finished his memorisation there at twelve. He told the newspaper Okaz that his teacher at al-Ammari was Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Rahim Ushayshi, and the newspaper Al-Watan says this Egyptian sheikh later gave him his ijaza in the narration of Hafs from Asim. Al-Watan also says he has recorded the complete Quran in the murattal style twice, in the narration of Hafs from Asim.
He first led taraweeh prayers at the age of ten. He read part of the Quran with Sheikh Ali Jaber, and he graduated in Islamic studies from the Faculty of Arts at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah.
The Ministry of Information appointed him a reciter for the Royal Court, and he later became King Fahd's personal reciter. He taught Islamic studies before joining King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah, where he heads the sharia affairs department. He is the imam and khatib of al-Anani Mosque in the al-Hamra district of Jeddah.

Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary was born on 17 September 1917 in the village of Shubra al-Namla, near Tanta in the Gharbia governorate of Egypt. He entered the Quran school at the age of four and finished memorising the Quran before he was eight. He then studied at the Ahmadi Mosque in Tanta, where he learned the ten readings, and he took a diploma in the ten readings from al-Azhar.
He first recited on Egyptian radio on 16 February 1944, and he was a reciter at the Mosque of al-Husayn in Cairo from 1955. In 1961 he was put in charge of all Egypt's recitation schools. In 1962 he became deputy head of the al-Azhar committee that checks printed copies of the Quran, and he later chaired it.
On 25 March 1964 his voice was the first to be broadcast on Egypt's Quran radio station. Egypt's State Information Service says he was the first to record the whole Quran in the murattal style, in the narration of Hafs from Asim, in 1961. He recited in many countries, at the United Nations and before the United States Congress. He died on 24 November 1980.

Yasser ad-Dussary, in full Yasser bin Rashid bin Husayn al-Wad'ani ad-Dussary, was born in al-Kharj, in the Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia. His biography on the site of the Presidency of Religious Affairs gives the year as 1400 AH, which runs from November 1979 to November 1980.
He took a bachelor's degree at the College of Sharia of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, then a master's degree and a doctorate in comparative jurisprudence at the university's Higher Judicial Institute. Among his teachers were Sheikh Abdullah bin Jibreen and Sheikh Abdulaziz Al ash-Sheikh.
He led the prayers at the Abdullah al-Khulaifi Mosque in Riyadh from 1995 and at Masjid al-Dakheel from 2005. He was a guest imam for the taraweeh and tahajjud prayers at the Grand Mosque in Makkah from 2015, and he became a permanent imam there in 2019 and a khatib in December 2022. Wikipedia says he was excused from the post in October 2023, at the end of a four-year contract, and re-appointed from Ramadan 2024. The Saudi Press Agency named him imam and khatib of the Grand Mosque in November 2025.
He teaches at a Saudi university, advises the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, and belongs to the Saudi Society for Da'wah Studies and the Saudi Scientific Jurisprudence Society.
